How do I fix my compact disc drive to my hp Windows XP computer?
I recently got a desktop computer. My kids decided that they were going to "help" change the cd in the disc drive. Long story short, it now doesn't recognize when there is a disc in there. It doesn't recognize there is a disc in there even if I do it manually. It simply opens up, I put the disc in, close it, and the light blinks 2 times then it's as if I did nothing at all. Any help is appreciated.
Did they actually open the computer? It might be they changed the auto-detect/auto-run settings, those are typically in place, so when you put a cd in, it instantly pops up either the install program or asks what program you want to use to read whatever is on the disc (music, movies, pictures etc) If that's turned off, the computer will accept the CD, but you have to actually go and click on My Computer and actually double click the CD drive. If it won't read the disc after double clicking then you may need a new drive, if it does read the disc, then right click the CD/DVD drive and click on properties there should be an option somewhere in there to activate the "Auto-Run" feature, which should solve the problem, if not then time for a new drive, a new DVD internal isn't to expensive either, just make sure the SATA or IDE is the same as your PC. If it's a newer PC you're probably using SATA cables, but a new DVD drive costs about $40-60, you could probably get a DVD burner for a few bucks more and solve most of your problems in one shot. But it doesn't sound like an actual hardware problem, more like a setting they clicked or unclicked.
