Which water treatment system is best for home use? There are several different types out there, and they range in price from $20 to over $3,000. Should you filter only the water coming out of one or two faucets, or should you go for a whole house filter? Figuring out the best water treatment for you and your family's needs is sometimes a little confusing. Hopefully, this article can give you some guidance.
First off, let's talk about the various water treatment systems that are on the market for home use. A few of the most popular technologies are distillation, reverse osmosis, ultraviolet light (UV), and carbon and ceramic filtration.
Distillers cost anywhere from just under $1,000 to over $3,000 for counter top, or under the sink units. Distillation works great unless the water your purifying has volatile chemicals in it. Unfortunately, the chlorine virtually all municipal water systems put in water can react with organic impurities to form volatile, carcinogenic chemicals called trihalomethanes. If present in your water, these trihalomethanes can be vaporized by the distiller's heating coil and then condense with the supposedly pure vapor. To my mind, this means that distillers are not among the best water treatment systems for home use. Besides, they're really expensive.
Reverse osmosis is a good type of system to consider. This technology works well, almost too well, in fact. The only problem with reverse osmosis filters is they filter out the trace minerals like potassium, calcium, and magnesium, that are supposed to be in our water. Drinking what's called "demineralized" water might also have some long term health consequences!
If you're not trying to filter out inorganic impurities, then UV is certainly a good water treatment system to think about. UV systems are not expensive. They work well on living impurities, if the water is exposed to the UV radiation long enough. The only problem with UV is that it can do nothing for inorganic impurities, like pesticides, lead, and prescription drugs. Although UV works well, I would not rate it as the best water treatment system for home use.
Probably the all-around best systems for home use employ carbon and ceramic filtration. The absolute best filters are usually two-step filters which are capable of filtering out both organic and inorganic impurities while leaving in those all important trace minerals. As a water treatment system, carbon and ceramic filters are easy to use, last a long time, and are relatively inexpensive.
