Dead XP laptop, recover files from HDD from vista?
I have a non working compaq xp laptop...it no longer turns on, i would like to "recover" the files and put them on my vista laptop. If i remove the xp hdd and plug it in via usb 2.0 will i be able to get my files off?
You can't plug it into a USB, unless you have a special adapter. Think about getting an external drive case. Place this disk inside the case and plug it into your USB.
Another option is to mount it in a desktop PC. Usually they have extra SATA or ATA connectors. If SATA, you will need a SATA cable. If ATA, you will need to buy a special adaptor, because a laptop ATA plug is different from a desktop ATA plug.
SATA cables are the skinny ones. ATA cables are the gray wide flat ones.
