Will My PC Run Good Games?

Ok I will tell you everything that i currently have.
Windows XP (getting vista in a week or so, comment on this please)
150gb hard driver, 90gb left.
Pentium(R) 4CPU 3.20GHz
3.19Ghz, 1.99 GB of RAM
i have directx 9.0
I currently have a REALLY BAD graphics card so this is my main concern. I have to have a "PCI express" one to fit my optiplex gx620...
The card i'm hoping to get within the next couple of days is " Geforce 8500GT 256mb x16 PCI express graphics card"
To what extent will my computer play good games?
Do i have to install Vista?
SHOULD i get 512mb or 256mb, the jump (price wise) is more than what i'm hoping to spend so only if it is necesary.

Forget about vista and stick with XP....until next yr, because microsoft are releasing a new operating system 'windows 7'

no point in getting vista now.
Now your pc...
hardrives ok but ideally for games you want 300GB + (average new games are around 10GB to install, thats not including game saves/mods/updates... i just installed Oblivion and loads of mods at the weekend, the total size is 30GB+)
processor.... bit dated but should be ok for now
looks like you have 2GB of memory, thats fine for XP and gaming
Now, graphic card. personally id try and find a 2nd hand Nvidia 7900 or ATI 1950.
These two are the best graphic cards you can get for direct x9.0 and are great for XP, even though they are old but you would have no problem playin latest games with them.
the new Nividia/ATI cards are DX10's, XP only runs DX9's. having said that, xp will stil be ok with the new dx10 cards, just that it wont look as good as vista (if that makes any sense)
but if you still plan to get vista or the new windows 7 then go ahead and get it. personally id go for ati 3850 or nvidia 8800gt, oh and get the 512mb versions
