I HAVE A DELL OPTIPLEX GX620 TRYING AO USE A ACER LCD 22"MONITOR?
DELL WILL NOT RECOGNIZE MY ACER MONITOR. IT WILL ONLY DEFAULT TO PLUG AND PLAY. IN DEVICE MANAGER MY ACER MONITOR IS NOT SHOWN. HOW DO I GET DELL TO RECOGNIZE MY MONITOR. HAVE DOWNLOADED NUMEROUS DRIVERS FROM ACER NOTHING WORKS.HAVE WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL SERVICE PACK 3

Maybe I am not understanding the issue you are having but why are you worried about the Windows telling you that your Acer monitor is an Acer monitor? Most monitors nowadays come up as "Plug and Play on ATI Radeon HD 3600 Series" or something similar. As long as the video card is capable of using the various resolutions of your monitor, you are good to go. Not all video cards are created equal, so if the problem is that you want to use 1680 x 1050 with your Acer AL2216Wbd (for example) and you are not able to get the resolution as a choice in the Display control panel, the problem is not the machine recognizing the monitor but, rather, the video card not being able to use that video mode. The solution is to replace the video card with something more capable. I personally have two Acer 22-inch widescreens hooked up to a Radeon HD3650 video card (both by DVI) and both monitors read as Plug and Play. One screen is the aforementioned AL2216Wbd while the other is a V223w (bought about 18 months after the AL model). Both work just fine in 1680 x 1050.
Something else to consider is whether you are going through a KVM (Keyboard/Video/Mouse) switch so as to use the same keyboard, mouse, and monitor with more than one machine. If so, then you have another potential stumbling block in the way. I found that both my 4-port and 8-port units in the office were limited to 1440 x 900 and really didn't like using that mode. If you're going through a KVM switch, look over your user manual and see what the specifications for the switch are. It will probably tell you the maximum resolution back there.
