How to dual monitor on Dell Optiplex GX620?
Hi all. I would like to setup dual monitors for my Dell Optiplex GX620. I do not currently have an extra graphics card. If I need an extra graphics card, which one works best? I have an extra monitor with a 15 pin male VGA connection, but the computer only has an extra 9 pin male VGA connection (the other 15 pin female connection is being used). Could I use a converter or do I definitely need a new graphics card? If I need to get a new graphics card, I would like one that connects to the 15 pin male VGA connection as I do not want to have to purchase extra cords or converters. Thank you.
The 9-pin D-sub connector on your GX620 is NOT a VGA port. It is an old serial port for connecting to dialup modems and serial mice. You cannot connect a monitor to it.
Also, you did not mention which particular GX620 you have. Dell has four different versions of the GX620, one tower version and three slimline versions. Not all of them have a PCIExpress 16x slot to accept a better graphics card, and only the tower version can accept a full-height PCIExpress video card.
Assuming you have the tower that can accept a full-height card, the best dual-monitor option would be a midrange video card that draws under 75 watts so it will work with you existing power supply, such as an nVidia 9500GT or an ATI HD4670. Both of those can drive two monitors independently.
