I'm buying a new Video card and I'm confused about the 512mb vs 1gb?
Hey guys .. I'm wondering if my computer will handle a 1gb video card . I've got a GX 280 Dell 3.0 ghz 4gb memory. 400w power supply. I see there is a 512mb and a 1gb. I mainly play the original battlefield 1942, but the reason I'm really moving up is that I now have a 26" monitor and I've seem to have lost the quality of pictures, videos etc. any suggestions will be great...Thanks
The 512MB vs 1GB on video cards is the memory on the card. This memory is available to the video card only and will not be visible on your computer. Increase in memory will allow more graphics intensive games to store more textures and information on the card for processing and for games that need very little video memory it can copy the data several times across the memory and have faster access to a copy. Games only need one copy to run but will not care which is given to them. The catch is however that all video cards have a standard and the extra 512mb of memory is most likely extra that the manufacturer wanted to add on top of the normal requirements. With 1GB you will be able to run more games and those that already run will be slightly faster.
To fix your monitor issue you need to go out and purchase a duel link DVI cable since your monitor is too big for a single link DVI or D-Sub connection. The duel link cable is necessary for monitors over 20 inches because of transfer limits per link.
