How important is GHz in a computer?
Basically there is a pc I REALLY like that has a lot of memory and etc. but it only has a 1.6 GHz processor. What effect will this have on the overall speed of the computer? My other option has half the space (RAM & Hard drive) but has a 2.8 GHz processor, would i be better off getting this one? I will use it mostly for storing music if that helps.
think of GHz as the same as a car engine, the bigger the numbers the faster it can go or the more weight it can pull. So would you rather have a 1.6 engine or a 2.8? As fuel economy is not important then the answer is 2.8, you can load more to it and it will perform better than the 1.6 under pressure.
The lower RAM compensates for lack of processing power so you can always buy more RAM cheaper than buying a processor, so get the bigger CPU and buy more RAM now (or later if on a budget).
The hard drive size issue - again it will take a while to fill up the space, simply add a second drive later if you can or an external one if you cant.
For the playback of the music the 1.6 should be able to cope but the 2.8 will certainly cope. If you are buying a PC with Vista (why?) then you need at least 2Gb to be sure of smooth playback on the 1.6, preferably more (max 4Gb if using 32 bit) and ideally the same 2Gb with the 2.8GHz as Vista is much happier with a minimum 2Gb of RAM.
If you have a Windows 7 machine then 1Gb is the minimum but 2Gb or more is much better no matter the size of the CPU, w7 is much less memory and resource hungry than Vista.
