Gateway Desktop Tower

How do you decommission a personal computer?
I had a Gateway desktop PC from 1998 until last summer, then I bought a laptop and have been using it exclusively. The old PC has only a floppy drive and one USB port for removeable media.
First, what about the data still on the old PC - anyone know an organized, logical way to assess what's there and transfer what I need to some other media? I haven't actually needed it, but I dread just dumping the machine without at least doing a reformat so that my social sec or other sensitive info isn't just out there on the curb.
Second, what should I do with the hardware - monitor, tower, hard drive, etc.? I don't want any of it and can't see how it would be worth listing on Craig's List (or am I wrong about that?).
Pull the hard drive out of it and keep it until you figure out what to do with it.
Alternatively, you can download something like PGP Desktop and use that to wipe all sensitive files, then wipe the free space.
Then do a check on EBay to see if any vintage PC buffs are paying anything worthwhile for your equipment. Everything else, sell at your next garage sale. Failing that, give it to Good Will or the Salvation Army, whoever will take it.
Or, you could use the system to play with Linux or FreeBSD to learn a thing or two about them.
