how do you get your system to be as fast as it can get?
Please read the question criteria. On any system (I now use windows XPpro but may go to linux) you want it to be at the best performance it can be. Please don't answer with the most obvious answers like defrag, clean up files.... I realize when you keep installing more programs on a pc the system usually slows down from processes running in the backround. Please base your answer on a freshly installed operating system with no added programs. You may think the system is as fast as it can get but there are still programs running in the backround. I was told there is a keystroke you can press to manually accept programs to start, maybe that would be a great place to start... or would you say linux is faster? And I also realize it depends on how your computer was put together with which hardwares that work together or conflict
As far as Operating Systems is concerned Linux is more stable, however I don't think all software programs run on Linux yet. I use Linux on my server and XP Pro 32bit on my desktop, I have XP Pro 64 bit for over a year and never installed it. Because software and hardware combined was just not there yet.
Go to START
Click RUN
In the Open text field type - MSCONFIG
Select OK
Under the General Tab which should be the default tab
Go to Selective Start up
Deselect load Start up items
Click Apply
Next go to the SERVICES TAB
Deselect all the services you really don't need to run. I would advise you on this one but it depends a lot on what you do with your system.
For example I might choose to disable all automatic updates because at the end of each week I give my system a complete over haul.
Now on the Hardware side:
1. I don't hear much about over clocking the CPU any more these days so we will skip that.
2. A good system board or Motherboard as some people call it is a Great place to start for example a motherboard designed for gaming is usually fast check for the Cache also:
Most people that are talking about caches are referring to L2 caches. Most home computers today have these 2 stages or(levels) of cache.
L3...L4... Cache
Some systems are so fast that they have more stages or levels of cache between the processor and the main memory. Each of these levels just gets the next number in the sequence (L1, L2, L3 and so on). The Exponential x704 processor is built around a design that has 3 levels of cache, as is the DEC Alpha. L3 caches are rare but not unheard of (especially as we are getting 500+ mhz computers), but for now I have not heard of any more stages beyond that . I know of no L4 caches or beyond, but with the way computers are going (faster and faster), who knows?
3. Max out your memory.
4. Make sure you have the proper CPU fan and Power supply sending the right amount of current to your system board. My power supply is 650 watts my other system is 350 watts.
5. Keep in mind that SCSI hardware runs faster than IDE for example where a IDE harddrive runs at 7,500 rps a SCSI will get you 15,000 rps
