Upgrades for Dell Optiplex Gx280 5-6 years old?
I have a 5-6 year old Dell Optiplex Gx280, its really bad at running games because of the (integrated?.. maybe) x300/x1000/x1550 video card. (its a business model). The computer has a pci-e slot, and it can support up to x16. I believe it has a 280 watt power supply in the computer, and i was wondering if there is a video card i can buy without getting some kind of new power supply. If not, then power supply suggestions would be helpful. also any tips on making games play faster would be great. thanks.
If your Optiplex 280 is a regular sized minitower (not a slim design) you can replace the power supply. Some models use regular ATX power supplies (cheap and easy to get) while others like the Dimension 4700 use BTX power supplies which means you need to order a Dell-specific one (more expensive) from companies like PC Power & Cooling.
For older machines, going through all that is usually more trouble than it's worth.
The good news is that Dell's power supplies are typically underrated. So a 300W Dell psu is really closer to a 350W generic. If your machine has a Dell 280W psu, it's probably closer to 300-325W.
The safest choices for video card upgrades you can install without needing to upgrade the power supply are the Radeon 4550, Radeon 4650 or GeForce 9500GT which aren't great for gaming but *WAY* better than the built-in graphics.
If your existing power supply is 300W, then you can could install a Radeon 4670 which is twice as fast. The GeForce 9600GT even better, but it's dicey- you probably need a 350W psu for that.
