Slow DSL internet with brand new Acer laptop - old desktop is fast, though!?
I bought a new Acer Apsire laptop which was not my first choice (for some reason I had it in my mind that Acer was not the way to go, though this laptop had everything I wanted for by far the cheapest price). It seems to work very well, and is very fast with most applications. However, my DSL is super slow with it. If I hook my 7 year old HP desktop back up to the DSL it is considerably faster than the laptop. Running IE with Quest/MSN ISP. I got all the Windows updates, and have really only installed MS Office and NOD32 (there is no other security software). Am I missing something???
Most likely all of those stupid apps that come preinstalled on the new computer are working in the background, checking on updates, advising the internet what you are doing every second, etc. Start, Run, MsConfig, startup and see exactly what is starting up when you boot up the computer... disable what you dont need....
also, uninstall any, ANY TOOLBARS, even yahoo, msn, or google from IE.
Antivirus software such as NOD32 will slow down your internet connection SIGNIFICANTLY as it will have to scan every website before it allows it to be displayed.
Momentarily disable or uninstall MOD32 for a bit and see JUST HOW much faster your connection is... You may also have built in spyware blockers (such as microsoft defender and yahoo spyware blocker) that are actually working against each other and using all of your processor speed.
Go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, and click the RESET button at the bottom after you delete any toolbars.
