Fast Hp Dc7700
HP DC7700 with E6700 CPU weird problem?
Hey guys i have a strange problem. I have an HP dc7700 and recently i upgrade my CPU from E6320 (1.86ghz) to E6700 (2.66ghz). The problem is that when i play Bad Compnay 2 on Medium-Low settings my Cpu fan is running reallt fast. But when i play other games on the Highest settings my cpu fan is stable..I run the CPU-Z and i got the following:
Core 0: 1592mb 266x6 and voltage is 1.300v
Why my Cpu is not running at 2.66ghz and it's underclock to 1.6ghz(1592mb)???
Also when i installed the CPU i used my old fan becasue it's bigger than Intel's but i didn't used any thermal paste because my fan has a little bit of it underneath. Please someone help me cause it's to annoying hearing the fan like an airplane engine!
Specs:
HP DC7700
E6700 2.66ghz
9600gt 512mb GDDR3
bios version 786E1 v1.08
3gb ram
Thanks!
This is going on a whim. But when you change CPU's if intel motherboards doesn't recognise the new processor it reverts back to an x6 multiplier. You might have a couple of problems getting the processor to run at its proper settings. HP motherboards do not usually have overclocking features, which is what you need to change settings like Multiplier to x10. See your e6320 was a x7 multiplier with a FSB of 266= 1860 or 1.8Ghz that your e6320 was rated at. Well your motherboard is still running the same FSB but has reverted back to x6 multiplier, therefore it is running x6 multiplier at 266FSB = 1592mhz or 1.5Ghz. 6 x 266 = 1592. You change that multiplier to x10 FSB is 266 and you will have 2660 or 2.66Ghz...
I have had this problem when I first built my computer with a P5Q SE ASUS motherboard, it reverted the q6600's multiplier to x6... So i just changed it in bios and had it running 3.0Ghz... But when I upgraded to my q9550, same thing, automatically reverted to x6 all over again, even though I didn't change a thing... So went back in and changed it to 8.5 and all was normal...
You can look through your bios and see if you can find a setting for your multiplier, if you can change it, you are lucky, as most HP and Dells have all that stuff locked, and most of the time hidden...
I am worried about you sticking the old heatsink back on there. That is the number 1 no no of all time. Go to Radio Shack and buy a tube of Artic Silver5. Come home take the heatsink off, clean all the old junk off of the heatsink and CPU with a soft rag and rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover. Leave the CPU in the socket, just unlatch the latch and pull the bracket back out of your way and clean the die completely. No use holding the CPU in your hand and taking chances... I like cotton balls and qtips myself. Make sure you get it all off. Then put a dab of Artic silver 5 on the die of the CPU. Now take a plastic baggy and push your finger into the corner tightly, and then smear that dab all across your CPU die evenly and completely, you might have to dab a slight dab again. Make sure you don't have any to cross over from the die to the bracket. When done, lock the CPU down and mount your heatsink... This old thermal paste might be why your fan was freakign out because the heatsink was getting hot spots from uneven, and old thermal paste...
My email is always open if you need info...
