Can a dual socket "server" board be used as a desktop board?
I think my gf's motherboard might me the cause of her reboots, but it also might be her processor. I ended up buying a processor but if that isn't the cause then I'll need to replace the motherboard. It's an older 370-socket computer and I'll have 2 "good" CPU's and a "server" board is roughly the same price as a normal socket-370 board (get them for about $15-20). Can I just use a server board as a desktop computer board, and how will the 2 processors interact? would they act like the newer dual core systems or at least faster than one now?
I planned on transferring everything over from this board to that, including RAM and PCI cards. and the boards I'm looking at are standard ATX
The cpus have to be matched in processor speed. For the 2 processors to work together you have to use an operating system that has support for it. It won't act like the the same as the newer dual core systems, they are using different motherboard architectures.
Provided your using an OS that does have dual cpu support, it should be faster at some things but you might not actually notice it for most average user operations but if your RAM is compatible with the m/b you shouldn't have a problem using a server board for a desktop. Just make sure you check all the specs before your stuck with something unusable with your hardware.
I'm assuming your wanting to go this route just to play with a dual processor motherboard. If not, i would ebay the processors for whatever you can get out of them and head off to newegg. For $100 you can grab a cpu/motherboard combo and a stick of memory and have her up and running with a faster computer than you would with an old dual proc m/b.
