core i7 processor limited by RAM?
is an intel i7 processor w/ a motherboard bus speed of 4.8GT/s limited by the speed of the RAM - 1600MHz DDR3? it was always my understanding that (in the case of processors with a FSB) the processor could only run as fast as the RAM allowed. With the incredible speeds of an i7 processor, is it limited in any way by RAM speed?
Yes and No.
DDR3-1600 gives you 1.6 GT/s.
In triple-channel mode, that is 4.8 GT/s. that will match 1:1 your processor bus speed.
However, that said, a Core i7 can run up to 3.33 GHz with 4 cores, or 13.32 GHz in parallel (not that typical apps will use this).
Lastly, PCI Express 2.0 x16 gives a rate of 5 GT/s.
So, yes and no. Some setups will slow a bit (unnoticable to the user really) under a very high end graphics card on PCI-E 2.0 x16 in full bandwidth conditions.
