There are several factors that can lead to sluggish pc shutdowns. Important: incorrect alteration of the Windows registry can result in system problems. Utmost caution is advised when performing the following steps. 1. Make sure to configure the amount of time that your operating system will take to stop open programs on shutdown
a. Start Registry Editor by clicking on Start --> Run, then type regedit.exe in the Open field
b. Once the tool is loaded, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop
c. Scroll down and right-click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout value under the Name field
d. From that menu, edit the string by clicking Modify
e. Modify the Value Data from 20000 to 1000
f. Then, click OK
g. Now, scroll up and right-click on the HungAppTimeout value
h. Select Modify
i. Change the Value Data from 5000 to 1000 also
j. Click on OK
2. Modify the same settings for all of the system users
a. In Registry Editor, work your way to HKEY_ USERS.DEFAULTControl PanelDesktop
b. Search for the WaitToKillAppTimeout value & right-click on it
c. Select Modify
d. Then change the Value Data from 20000 to 1000
e. Then, click on OK
f. Next, look for the HungAppTimeout value and right-click on it
g. Select Modify
h. Then change the Value Data to 1000 also
i. Then, click on OK
3. Lower the amount of time it takes to shut down services after a shutdown command is received by the system. If you've got better things to do than wait to shut down XP, I would highly recommend this.
a. In the Registry Editor, work your way to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetControl
b. Look for the WaitToKillServiceTimeout value & right-click on it
c. Select Modify
d. Then, Modify the Data Value to 1000
e. Click OK
4. Restart your PC for changes to take effect.
That's it! Fairly easy, right? This should significantly improve your computer's shutdown time. Just remember that the more rapidly you shut down XP, the sooner you can carry on with your day or test out that new program or game you just installed.
