A: Theres 2 individual processing cores in one die. Basically, 2 processors in one processor.
Q: also is this processor 2x1Ghz processors or 2x2Ghz?
A: They both run at 2Ghz each, however it doesn't add up to 4ghz. Multicores don't work like that. Think of it as 2 cars traveling at 10miles per hour. Do both these cars add up to 20miles per hour? no. Same thing with dual cores.

A: Its a VERY common myth that alot of inexperienced people believe that multicore processors add up to give it a final ghz. The GHZ (Gigahertz) is simply the clock at which the computer processor is running.... higher clock doesn't mean faster speed. it does help A LITTLE bit, but its unnoticeable. The most important factor of performance is the processor architechure. now the interesting part is in the architecture of the CPU, will make a bigger impact that the speed alone. You have to look if the CPU allows multithreading, hyperthreading and so forth. How the CPU handles branch prediction and.... hmmm i think i can keep on. Speed alone does not covers all the aspect of performance. Also the pipeline of each CPU can definitely have an effect to performance. The architecture of a CPU (processor) tells if its good performance or not... for example, multithreading cpu will always outperform a singlethreading cpu... even if the singlethreaded cpu has a very high clockspeed compared to the multithreaded one. Multithreading basically means that it can process more than 1 different kind of data simultaneously. Theres bunch of technologies in a cpu that affect speed but the architechure affects the performance the MOST.
Q: Whats the advantage of dual core processors over single core processors:
A: Single-core CPU has to feed strings of instructions in order, execute, then selectively store in its cache for quick retrieval. When data outside the cache is required, it is retrieved through the system bus from random access memory (RAM) or from storage devices. Accessing these slows down performance to the maximum speed the bus, RAM or storage device will allow, which is far slower than the speed of the CPU. The situation is compounded when multi-tasking. In this case the processor must switch back and forth between two or more sets of data streams and programs. CPU resources are depleted and performance suffers and bottlenecks start to happen or system crashes. Dual Core CPU has two cores that handles incoming data strings simultaneously to improve efficiency. Just as two heads are better than one, so are two hands. Now when one is executing the other can be accessing the system bus or executing its own code.
extra stuff: its possible to overclock a pentium 4 processor to over 5ghz with liquid nitrogen cooling, but the performance will always be worser than the latest dual core processors today like core 2 duo and amd athlon x2.
