Intel Pentium D 965 Extreme Edition vs. AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+?
Which processor? I am going to build a gaming computer and I need to know which processor is better for it. The PD 965 has a clock speed of 3.73GHz and it's dual core, but it's old. The A64 X2 has a clock speed of 3.10GHz and it's dual core, and it's newer. Which one?
P.S. I am NOT going to overclock.
Both are dual-cores.
A Core 2 Duo would smoke them all, but between the two the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ will perform better. Athlon 64 X2, despite lower clocks, easily outperformed Pentium Ds. Pentium Ds have a very, very inefficient architecture design, and they have an insanely long 31-stage pipeline, compared to the 12-stage one on the Athlon 64 X2. Longer pipelines made it take longer for a single instruction to be processed, and that in turn leads to a much less instructions per clock cycle. Due to that Pentium Ds processed much less instructions per clock cycle than a Athlon 64 X2.
In other words the Athlon 64 X2 could do a lot more work for the same amount of GHz, and despite the .6Ghz clock speed advantage of the Pentium D, the Athlon 64 X2's more efficient architecture allowed it to still outperform it.
