Dual Core vs Core 2 Duo vs AMD Athlon X2 for a basic desktop?
Shopping around for a new processor for my bro, I found that the local stores did not have many options to offer. I was offered the following CPUs:
1) Intel Dual Core E5200 2.6GHz - Rs.3275
2) Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 2.93 GHz - Rs. 5625
3) AMD Athlon X2 250 3GHz - Rs. 3350
There were a few more on the offering but I have narrowed down my list to the 3 above.
The PC will be mainly used for basic tasks(documents, spreadsheets and stuff) and entertainment and perhaps, some light gaming. Upon doing some research I have found that the AMD CPU might be enough, but I still would like to know everything about them before I make the final decision. Any suggestions to help me make the decision?
Also, I know that Dual Core CPUs are not energy efficient and do not offer the same performance for a given clock speed as the Core 2 Duo, but is the Core 2 Duo really an advantage, for just these basic tasks?
AMD Athlon X2 250 3GHz is equivalent to Core 2 Duo E7500. So I would go with any of these two. Some idiots have told AMD gets hot, whereas they dont know that every microprocessor gets hot under load. I have been using AMD Phenom II and its temperature never crosses 55C even under gaming stress.
And AMD Athlon X2 250 temperature stays a cool maximum of 38C degrees under load. So its really a good processor for its price. And you can even game on it. Its got overclocking capacity which Intels dont have. You can overclock it to around 3.4GHz if needed.
The Dual Core is the worst of the lot.
For the price of the Core2Duo you can get AMD Athlon II X4 620 Quad core processor for Rs.5400/-
It beats Intel Core2Quad Q8200(Rs.8050) in performance and price. Its also a new architecture processor and excellent for multithreaded apps and gaming.
If you are needing a good quad core processor for your next build I would without a doubt encourage you to look into the new Athlon II X4 series because it will be money well spent.
