If I understood this correctly, you have two sticks of 1GB RAM running in dual channel in slots 1&3, and you want to stick in a 256MB stick in one of the free slots?
I would say don't. Mixing and matching RAM can create instabilities, and 256MB really isn't enough RAM to worry about losing. You also have to worry about speeds. If your 1GB sticks of RAM operate at 800MHz and the 256MB stick runs at 667MHz, then all of your RAM would be downclocked to 667MHz. Same goes for all other speeds. The slowest stick of RAM will be the fastest speed for every other stick.
I'd say just use your 2GB of RAM and leave the old one out. RAM is so cheap these days that if you needed more you might as well just buy one more stick of 1GB RAM that is the same brand, model and speed.
