Desktop Tower Ati
Upgrading my Intel Pentium Dual Core (desktop)?
I have a Dell Vostro 220 Mini Tower desktop that currently has:
300 Watt Power Supply
Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.2GHz
2GB DDR2 SDRAM
ATI Radeon HD 3450
I want to upgrade this to:
550 Watt Power Supply
Intel Core i5 860
4GB DDR2 SDRAM
GeForce GTX 275
My question is; I've been looking around inside my computer, and I can't seem to find a way to to change the processor that is currently installed in it, thus; can I or can I not upgrade this Pentium Dual Core processor?
Additionally, something in this computer has just failed. The power light is amber, though I doubt it's the motherboard; the power supply has been giving off odd noises for a while, however; if it is the mother board, what are my options.
Pentiums use LGA 775 "sockets," Core i5's use LGA 1156. You would need to change the motherboard to use that processor, then that would require ddr3 ram. The best you can hope for is a better 775 CPU, like a core 2 duo if the motherboard supports it.
But yeah, you can change the processor. Its under the heatsink, which is a big finned metal thing with a fan on the top, probably in the middle of your motherboard. Most of those have pushpins to hold it on, turn them about 90 degrees, then pull up on all 4 to remove the heatsink. Keep in mind not all use the pushpin design, my desktop had the heatsink screwed to a back plate...
Anyways, then once the heatsink is out of the way, lift up this lever thing on the side of the socket, then lift the "cover," and pry out the cpu.
Remember if you decide to do this, take care of static electricity, try to avoid getting dust in the socket, avoid damaging any pins, the cpu should just sort of slip into place. You will also have to reapply thermal paste to the heatsink, or replace it with one that has the stuff already on it.
