can a 8 yr-old pentium III 600mhz computer be upgraded?
I have a compaq pentium III 600mhz desktop computer purchased in 2000. Can I upgrade the processor to the newest PIII or P4 so that I can run linux Ubuntu smoothly? I currently have a 2.2ghz celeron but it is slow at running linux. Would an upgraded PIII give me better performance?
You would need to upgrade the motherboard before you could upgrade the CPU to a P4 and the motherboard upgrade would pretty much force you to upgrade the RAM to a newer standard. If the case isn't a standard size/configuration you may not be able to find a motherboard to fit. Though it can be done, it's not very practical. You'd be better off buying a low cost system and using it with your current monitor, mouse and key board.
Upgrading to a faster P3 would be much easier and cheaper but give less of a performance increase. I don't even know if they make new P3's I can only find pulls.
