My new DELL 9100 dual-processor loaded top of the line desktop runs slower than my 8 year old machine. Why?
The 9100 has 2 gigs of memory, 250 gig drive, home theater, dual dvd read/writes. I installed the beta fix from DELL ("Processor Threading problem fix"?), still no speed. Any ideas? Thanks
PS Running Norton Internet Security and Zone Alarm Pro, any connection?
Your problem could be either software related or hardware related.
Software:
1. It could be the Operating System itself.(Win XP). If you do not have important information on the computer(info. that cannot be replaced), then DELL PCs offer a restoration of the whole software package (including Win XP) with minimum trouble. This is called PC Restore. The procedure for this is...
Restart your comp and immediately you would see a blue bar on the top. At that point hold down the Control (Ctrl) key and keep tap F11 2-3 times. You would see, "PC Restore by Symantec". Now, use your mouse to click on Restore. Then on the next screen click on confirm. This process would take about 10 minutes to complete. But, I must warn you, all the information on the computer would be LOST and it would be as if just taken out of the box.
2. If you are not sure whether its Win XP, then it could also be some of the softwares installed on the comp. There is a possibility that Norton and Zone Alarm could clash. You could try doing this. Click on start, then click on run. type in MSConfig and click ok. Now, click on the "startup" tab on the top of the window that appears. Now, click on the button that says, disable all. Apply the changes and restart your comp. Check the speed of the comp now.
3. As the others have mentioned, it could be spyware too. The PC Restore option will take care of spyware for good. But, if you do not want to go for a PC Restore, then you can use the other options that have been mentioned here. They are pretty good.
Hardware:
This problem could arise due to certain problems in the hardware also. Specifically, the hard drive and the memory. There are specific techniques to diagnose them too.
For a Hard Drive: Switch off the computer and start it up again. You would see a blue DELL logo this time. At that logo, tap F12 2-3 times. You would get to a Boot Sequence options menu. It would have an option that says hard drive diagnostics. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard and select it and hit enter. This test is for the hard drive and detects its basic functionality. It will take about 2-3 minutes depending on the size and the condition of the hard drive.
After the test....
If it says the test has passed, then the hard drive has passed the test. You can restart the computer.
If it says the test has failed in any of the options listed, the contact DELL Tech support to get a few other diagnostic techniques for hard drives.
For all other hardware problems, contact DELL Technical support. They are real good technicians.
