My grandchildren, aged between 6 and 19, use my desktop computer.?
Is their anyway I can block them downloading, (accidentally or purposely,) inappropriate sites.

you can use things like net nanny.
However, kids these day are quite clever and may be able to circumvent the protection.
Or they will use their ipod or netbook at your house and access inappropriate content.
What i found is that you can configure your router to use OpenDNS services and have it filter the domains it will accept to resolve, hence limiting which website they can go to whatever device they use on your internet connection. you can specify no nudity, non gambling, no social networking, and put restrictions by hours etc.
Some routers come ready to be setup to OpenDNS. netgear i think has a label explaining how to do it.
Most others can be configured too but it will be non trivial, so maybe it's best you don't try.

I have set it up at my mother's and she's very happy to know the kids are safe.
It's not 100%foolproof but they update the list of disallowed sites for each category continuously, and do a fairly good job at it. you can create an account so that if you need to you can override the settings from your computer to , say, buy some wine.
