Why does my computer only recognize 3GB of RAM?
I have a Dell Precision 490 with Xeon chip, 2.77Ghz, processor. 64bit ready. Software is Windows XP 32bit.
It has 8 RAM slots and I can put in up to 32GB of RAM according to Dell specs.
I had 2GB RAM. 512MB in slots 1 through 4.
I added 2 more GB RAM. I put two 1GB RAM in slots 1 and 2. put the other 512MB RAM into slots 3 through 6.
My computer only is saying I have 3GB of RAM. Computer is running much faster. Ran Belark and it says I have the RAM in all the slots.
Why is it recognizing only 3GB of RAM? Is it because of my processor or because it's running on 32bit?
Also, why are there so many RAM slots on my computer when it can only recognize 3GB?
If I bought 2 more 1GB RAM and placed them in slots 3 and 4, will it get 4GB, or is it waste of my money?
You'll need to upgrade your OS to a 64-bit version. Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit can recognize up to 192GB of RAM, and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit can recognize up to 16GB.
It has nothing to do with your RAM slots.
