my old computer died on me , My job gave me a computer that they no longer use?
the computer they gave me is kinda old but its ok its a dell precision 340. (pent. 4, 2.2ghz) there is no hard drive . I have a formated hard drive but since I'm relatively new to computers I don't know where to start as far as installing an operating system. I want windows xp and I've spotted some listings on craigslist selling copies of windows xp but i don't know what to look out for soze I dont get scammed. there is a windows xp pro sticker on my computer. does the disk need product key......if the product key has been used before does that make it useless for my computer.....as i said I've never done this before. any links for os intallation would be very helpful
Yes, Windows require a product key. You need it for updates and other stuff. So you need a genuine windows key.
If the product key has been used, Microsoft might not detect it is a genuine windows key, so don't risk it.
Purchase an new copy from a computer store like Best Buys, Circuit City, etc. Unless you want to get an illegal copy from a friend or something which is what most people do anyways, at least the ones with access to a free copy.
