I have a Dell Optiplex & want to install XP so how do I do it?
It has only 3 options in boot sequence, diskette, CD-ROM & hard disk of which CD shows not installed. & I have a XP CD bootable disk and the problem is that the hard disk already has Windows 2000 which is loading & it has a password which I cannot get into.
If the drive does not work in Windows try reseating the cables to the drive and motherboard. It could be a bad cable, a bad drive, or a bad controller on the motherboard.
If the drive does work in Windows, pressing F12 at initial power on (Dell Screen) will usually allow the system to come up with a boot menu (this really depends on what model this is). At the menu you will be able to choose the CD-ROM and boot from the XP CD. If this does not work pressing F2 will allow you to get in the BIOS and change the boot order.
Another option might be trying to update to the current system BIOS for this system at http://support.dell.com Service Manuals for Optiplex systems can be viewed there as well.
