Can I upgrade my Dell Dimension E510 with Core 2 Duo?
My Dimension E510 currently has a Pentium D processor, using an LGA 775 socket. Can I swap out the Pentium D for an Intel Core 2 Duo processor? Has anyone done this before?
It's not the sockets that aren't compatible, it's the front side bus. The Pentium D runs at typically 800MHz FSB (one model at 533). The Core 2 Duo run at 1066, except the 45nm ones run at 1333. This is motherboard related (the FSB is part of the motherboard).
This FSB is hardcoded and cannot be changed except through overclocking, but it won't change it's compatibility. Also, overclocking THAT much would certainly fry your chipset. That'd be almost a 50% increase. Typical air-cooled overclocks should be considered pretty big at anything close to 30% of stock speed.
