Can Dell XPS 420 desktops handle 8 GB of memory?
I'm thinking of purchasing a Dell XPS 420 computer but on the customizing part... 4 GB seems to be the max Dell will allow one to add to the order. I realize on a 32-bit OS that 4 GB is the max (3 GB actually) but I was just wondering if the machine itself can support 8 GB should I purchase the PC and then add my own 64-bit OS. Thanks.
David R is wrong & right... but in this case he is wrong & wrong... the XPS 420 has a 64-bit supported CPU therefore a 64-bit OS will work which IS needed to use 8GB of RAM.
As far as the system supporting 8GB of RAM... best way to find out is to ask a Dell tech rep or try installing more RAM yourself should you decide to purchase the PC. If the motherboard won't support the extra RAM you will know it but no damage will be done so there is no worries in experimenting on this issue if you desire to do so.
As far as the 3rd guy Computer Knowledge saying you won't need more than 4GB of RAM... he is like other jerk techs out there thinking they know what others should do with computers instead of letting the people do what they may or may not want. If a person WANTS more RAM than they need then so be it. There is nothing wrong with that and no need to tell them what they need & don't need because believe it or not Computer Knowledge... some people do realize what they may or may not need and want to still have more just because. Besides... how do you know what this guy needs? This guy may need tons of memory for whatever he does.
