Dell 512mb Xp
I just upgraded my Dell laptop from 512mb RAM to 2gig, and there is no difference that I can tell.?
I went into the system icon and see that it shows 2gig ram. Is there a setting or settings in XP that would not use this additional ram unless I change them? I have my pc set to let "windows choose what is best for my computer", and it is set to use ram for programs. I thought I was going to see a big difference and I'm so disappointed that I my just return the ram. Any help would be appreciated. 
more ram doesn't necessarily equal more speed.
(with the exception of you not having installed it correctly... in the propper channels. or having a bad stick of ram ...which you can download/online check with scanner/tester utilities)
especially for every day general computing.
Ram will help with games, or resource intensive programs/files... but in general terms... it doesn't make your computer faster.
ram is the part of your computer that ...aids in transferring data back and forth from the HD. CPU determines how fast your computer crunches that info... and HD determines how much you can store.
The bigger drain on a computer..for most average folks is what programs they're using... or how much junk is on their computer. or programs ...beneficial or malicious that're hogging system resources all the time...or that kick in, when you try to do other things. otherwise tripping up/slowing down your computer performance
You'll notice a bigger bump in system's performance... be re-installing windows and buying a can of compressed air. ...giving you a fresh copy of windows, and blowing the dust out of a system is normally the cheapest "upgrade" around.
may also look into cleaning up ..processes. from your task manager. by deleting old programs. Anything you don't use on a daily basis you should try and disable.
lots of digital cameras, printers, or other gadgets come with dumb little utilities that're always running. If they can't be shut off easily...delete them.
Toolbars, and char programs... yahoo, AOL, google. weather bug... free games or programs you've downloaded. Anything that's tacked onto your web browser. should be axed
...any old game. or old program. or redundant program ...like. you don't need real player, windows media player, quick time all on your comp. ...thin the herd.
Also... large programs like itunes.. or a large outlook/email file hosted on your local machine will slow it down considerably in start up. to a lesser extent a lot of useless icons, or files left on the desktop is not good... delete what you don't use... or secure them elsewhere.
Anti-virus software is another huge hog of system resources... i recommend to lots of people to ditch their norton/mcaffee for better, slim/stream line AV software... or just make do without it.
can also run a defrag utilitiy to straight'n up your HD ...and disk clean up to ...take care of your online trash.
Ram should speed up your computer somewhat. But for most people... it's not their machine... but the stuff THEY HAVE PUT ON IT that make it slow.
