Double check me-old salt needs help.Dell 8400: swapping a maxtor 160 with a cavier green 500.dell crashed.?
chronological order:1)write down green info-parameters for cmos.,2)start up dell enter cmos drive info and change over to green parameters, save and shut down.,3) unplug, ground static,swap out c drive to green; close up-put green software in drive, plug in and start dell with green drive.,4)put in widows boot and install enter product key. Set up my back up external and do a restore to bring up to date.
What did I miss? I am figuring the cavier green disk will set up format. Please straighten me out so I have it mapped in my head. I can't afford the easy route of tech repair, so I have to pull up my college knowledge which was back in the days of dos. What ever help- I really appreciate. Bill
So you've listed what you plan to do in steps ...
If you have a backup of data to be restored, you should need no BIOS adjustment. Let the Dell auto-detect and if it doesn't -- then mess with BIOS as required. Installing the hardware is pretty much just change it out these days.
Do you mean the old hard drive crashed when you say "dell crashed"? That's the usual motivator for a replacement HD. If the Dell crashed after installing a new HD, it was probably because you defeated its auto-detect ability and it then didn't recognize what it found.
When you get a boot claiming no OS found on the new drive, reboot from the CD and install Windows from it. Formatting may be a choice, which you should do. Me, I'd be installing Linux, but YRMV.
Then the hard work: add backed up data, get on the Internet, grab Windows updates (which will require registration and agreement that you have "genuine" status), install your own software, and find/install missing drivers ...
