Best CPU for Dell Optiplex GX520?
I recently bought a Dell Optiplex GX520 on ebay. The hard drive needs replacing and so im basicly using it as a little project, to make the best of it as i can. Im hoping to fit a 1TB hard drive and use it for burning/copying movies, storing all my mp3's etc. And general office work on it.
Which is the best CPU i could fit? I hear it wont handle some.
Vomit is correct...Pentium D (800mhz FSB) is the highest processor that the Intel 945 Express Chipset can handle, of which the fastest would be the Intel Pentium D960,( 3.6ghz, 4mb L2 cache, 800mhz FSB), which for the uses you have described the Pentium D945(3.4ghz, 4mb L2 cache, 800mhz FSB) is more than adequate and can be had for as cheap as about $60...the D960's are still rather pricey for an "end of life" processor.

make sure you have appropriate cooling if you go that route, as that chip runs quite hot
