I have HP compaq dc5750 windows xp OS..?
whenever i boot my cpu i get the message: svchost.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvience--then there's the option of debug or close. Is this a virus? I have googled this message and one site says it is, and another says not to delete it bc its needed. i have tried system restore, i tried to run mcafee--anything i click on just freezes cpu. i even tried going into add/remove programs to see if anything in there wasent from before..it all freezes. someone please help me. this is the cpu i work from home with and my children homeschool from. If this is a virus i dontknow how it wouldve gotten on there any suggestions?
SVChost is a generic host process for windows. The only time you will ever see it is in your windows task manager. If you download Process Explorer from Technet it will show you the critical components that are being run inside the container. The Debug thing you are seeing is the windows debugger, which I believe is a development tool. Definitely not a virus and not something that you can actually do anything with unless you know a whole lot of C++ or visual C. So svchost.exe is a necessary windows program, however, process explorer will show you what is actually running so you can diagnose which of the programs is bad.
