What processors would be an upgrade from a Pentium D (dual core) 3.4 GHz cpu?
I have a that processor in my current set up with 1 Gb Memory. I know the processor is rather old, but all of the newer computers I see have processors that are "slower". Is GHz not sufficient to compare cpu's? Would say, a Core 2 Duo running at 2.0 GHz be superior for some reason?
Almost any Core 2 CPU will vastly outperform the Pentium D. While the clock rate is lower, the Core 2's need far fewer clocks to accomplish the same amount of work.
For example, your Pentium D 3.4GHz dual core CPU has a PassMark speed rating of 898. An Intel Core 2 Duo E4700 2.6Ghz (a fairly low-end Core 2 Duo) has a PassMark rating of 1,477. Even the lowly E4400 has a PassMark rating of 1,197. On the high end, an E6850 (3.0 GHz) has a PassMark rating of 1,846.
Among CPUs with the same number of cores, PassMark ratings are a very accurate measure of relative performance.
