Should I upgrade my XP computer to Windows 7?
I skipped the Vista upgrade, since I don't like a slow as hell 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 HT with 1.5 GB of memory computer.
Would Windows 7 be slower than XP on the same hardware? And if it is, by how much?
You should NOT upgrade at least until you have more memory!!!
It would be my experienced advice to not upgrade. I had Vista and hated it. I was going to go back to XP, but Windows 7 has support for my QuadCore processor...
So, I'd say keep XP, run Desktop Cleanup at least twice a month, defragment, download and run a free version of Adaware (search... it's very popular), and if you feel comfortable, click the start menu, click "run", and type MSCONFIG. The tabs towards the right allow you to select what programs will run when you startup your computer. (of course, before doing all of this, uninstall all programs that you are not using)
Then, if you can afford it, buy more memory. this will always speed up your computer. HOwever, you should be fine.
One last option would be to restore your computer back to factory settings... but that is another question
