Linking computer to a 40" LCD samsung TV - is it a good idea?

I'm about to buy a 40" LCD 1080P samsung TV and I want to use it, among other thing, as a monitor for my computer. I have a Pentium 4, 3.4ghz with an Nvidia 8800 GTS and I will connect it with an HDMI cable.

I've heard many contradicting things like "your card will not be able to drive your games at 1920 X 1080 at a descent refresh rate" or "you will not be able to read anything because it's not a monitor" or "dual view on your monitor and on your TV is not possible"

FOR THOSE WITH REAL EXPERIENCE - please tell me if it's a good idea and if the resolution is worth spending 2000$ on a 1080p TV for that.

****WARNING--- NOT AN EXPERT******

Now that you know....

If you are ONLY going to buy the monitor for gaming, I'd say no. You can get better gaming monitors for considerably less. If you were going to use it for TV as well, you might consider it, but you could use XP Media Center Edition or Vista Home Premium to watch Tv on your computer. According to http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2926&p=4
the card should handle it: the card should manage a 90 - 100 fps (depending on which model you got) output on Battlefield 2 at 2560x1600 without Anti-aliasing and 26-60 fps with 4x Anti-aliasing on, which resolution is past what your TV can handle. At still above what your TV can handle, it can obtain nearly 105 - 124 fps with 4x AA. Your card should automatically downconvert everything for your TV. I did not realize that the card had an HDMI out, you may want to look at that, because with component out you can only manage 1080i to your TV. I might be wrong, I wasn't looking to see if there was an HDMI out, I just didn't specifically see it. Also, make sure that your TV can accept whatever input you choose, HDMI, or monitor out. I would advise that you ask other people as well, as I am not with "real experiance", but I did a bit of research, and that is what I came up with. Hope this helps!!!

I did some research on other options that would most certainly work---

Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP-HC is 30" 2560 x 1600 resolution (much more than a 1080p HDTV) is $1499 direct order.

Dell UltraSharp 2707WFP is 27" 1920 x 1200 resolution (still more than HDTVs) and $1000
