Boot Fix Vista

Fix Windows Vista Master Boot Record from within Linux?
I have just installed my first copy of linux using ubuntu.. i am very good on windows and have not had a problem adjusting to linux.. i was able to mount the ntfs file system and access (read/write) my windows files.. i have one hard drive, now with two partitions.. partition 1 windows partition 2 linux.. i used ubuntu installer to install linux, but my cdrom doesn't work, so i started the "ubuntu installer" from within windows.. the install went fine, have grub working, problem is that when i select windows vista on the list of os, the ubuntu installer boots up instead of windows.. i looked at my files, and it seems ubuntu installer overwrote my vista mbr to boot itself every single time.. i need some direction on how to repair my vista mbr without the cdrom and from within linux.. i do have internet access and my linux is working fine, all files on the ntfs system are intact, and it's just a matter of straightening out the vista mbr from within linux, but i don't have a cdrom. help?

I believe the answer lies there.
Although you're using Windows Vista, you can't actually get to it in order to use EasyBCD, so you'll have to go with the second, Windows XP, "dd" solution. Make a file out of the first 512 bytes of the Ubuntu partition, put it in the root of the Windows filesystem, then use Vi or emacs or Kate or gEdit to add "C:Ubunutu.mbr Ubuntu" to boot.ini.
