Would upgrading my RAM by 512MB really make a difference?
I have the first generation iMac G5 with the PowerPC 1.8GHz processor. Currently with 1.5GBs of RAM right now, max is 2GBs.
I run CS3 and Lightroom 2 a lot on the computer and it's slow. I'm wondering if it would make a difference when editing pictures using those programs. I have a webinar coming up where I need to multi-task - skype, video capture AND having CS3 open. I'm not even sure if the iMac would be able to keep up.
Upgrade by 512MBs or buy a new iMac? If 512MBs really makes a difference, enough to hold out on a new iMac right now, that would be great. I'd love to get my PC laptop junked out to have that $ go towards a new iMac but I can't wait forever!
no, upgrading the ram makes definitely no difference. the bottleneck of that iMac G5 is its old and slow 1.8Ghz PowerPC cpu.

as far as i know this G5 model has only 2 ram slots. as you have 1.5GB, this means that there is 1 modul of 1GB and another of 512MB. in order to upgrade the ram you have to remove the 512MB modul and then replace it with a 1GB modul. but there is still another problem, if the old and the new memory module don't match to each other it will not work (if a memory module is compatible to another is hard to tell). i tell you this because that G5 is pretty old and the existing ram type is likely no more available.
