Hooking up Dual Monitors on a Dell Optiplex 745 Desktop PC?
I have a Dell Optiplex 745 PC with Windows XP which is hooked up to my ICP-MS scientific instrument at work. I currently have only one monitor hooked up as typical but would like to hook up a secondary monitor to the PC. I would like the ability to move windows to one monitor and leave others on the main monitor. I have had this set up several times in the past at my office but I never actually watched how it was set up.
I would like to know what I need to do to get this set up as well as what cables or parts that I need to buy in order to do this (if any). If someone could provide some pretty simple step by step instructions then that would be great. Also please let me know if the PC that I have will not support such function.
To drive two monitors independently, a computer needs to have a graphics card that has two video output jacks.
If your Optiplex 745 is the base model, it is using the graphics built into the motherboard, which is NOT capable of driving two monitors.
The Optiplex 745 does have a PCIExpress 16x slot for accepting a new graphics card though. Pretty much any decent PCIExpress 16x graphics card would have two video outputs.
You didn't mention which particular form factor is your Optiplex. The 745 comes in four different case sizes-- If you have the full-height tower version, it can fit a full-height PCIExpress 16x video card. I suggest the ATI HD5750, which can actually drive up to THREE monitors independently (one of the three monitors must be a DisplayPort monitor though.).
