I have 256 mb of ram with windows xp. Should I add 256 to make 512 or should I add 512 to make 768?
I want to know how much of a diffrence will I notice in speeds if I add the 256 or if I add the 512
It depends on the applications you use. If you are using resource hungry programs, which need more memory , then u may go for a 512 DIMM. Otherwise for normal use, XP should run decently with 512 MB RAM. But make sure that both DIMMs are of the same frequency and type (DDR1/DDR2). Coming to difference in speeds, again it depends on the memory required and memory available. It is not that more memory means more speed. When ur computer has less memory than required by it's running applications it uses a portion of your hard disk (virtual memory) to transfer the inactive programs' memory. This makes the system slower. Even if u have more memory than required it doesnot necessarily make the system faster. I have 2 GB RAM on my desktop. Except when I use SAP, my system requires not more than 300-400 MB of RAM. Hence my system runs at same speed with 512 RAM and 2 GB RAM when it requires 300-400 MB RAM.....
