There are several options of external digital storage available for the legendary Akai MPC2000 and MPC2000XL Drum Machines (or sampler).
1. There is the solid state scsi card reader/writer drive. These are available in 2 flavors: hot-swappable and non hot-swappable.
HOT-SWAPPABLE drives are now rare and hard-to-find but allow the removable of cf cards regardless power status (on or off) and some models are limited to a maximum of 4GB storage. PCMCIA adapter card is needed to insert compact flash card so that it can interface with the drive's slot. This drive has no moving parts. Due to its rarity, it is very expensive.
NON HOT-SWAPPABLE drives card can only be removed when equipment is off. Depending on the sampler's operating system used, the drive will allow use of compact flash cards up to a whopping 16GB capacity. But With a maximum capacity of this size, there is more than enough storage, that swapping out the card will not be necessary. A pcmcia adapter card is not needed and all you do is insert the compactflash card and turn the equipment on. This drive has no moving parts.
2. There is the traditional and widely-used SCSI ZIP DRIVE which is available in 2 capacities. 100MB and 250MB models. The MPC2000 and MPC2000XL sampler recognizes scsi zip drives that have the 2 switches located between the ports. SCSI ID switch and termination switch. The scsi id switch must be set to 5. The termination switch must be set to OFF. The 100MB scsi zip drive can read and write to 100MB zip disks. The 250MB scsi zip drive models can read and write to 100MB and 250MB zip disks.
3. Another alternative form of digital storage is the SCSI HARD DRIVE. The most popular sizes used are 2GB, 4GB, and 9GB. One thing to keep in mind is that NOT all makes and models will be compatible nor recognized by the MPC2000 and MPC2000XL. Popular makes used are IBM and Seagate but then again, not all models will work and must be tested individually. One drawback is the drive can be noisy for some producers and can, in some cases, be prone to crash and fail, meaning your work can be lost. In this case, it is highly recommended that your work be backed-up to a secondary drive.
4. Another device used is the SCSI CD-ROM DRIVE. This drive is solely used only for reading samples (in either akai-format or wav) so that the sampler can load them and produce beats. The MPC will not write to the CD drive. Given that there are a lot CDs on the market, it is a good idea to have a cd-rom drive in the set-up.
