Okay, I'm getting a new desktop, a Dell Inspiron 530. I'm getting it with 2GB of RAM. Windows XP or Vista?
I've heard lots of stories how Vista is not good. But I just read that XP will no longer be for sale in a couple months. I will be using the desktop for basic stuff like cd burning, music files, surfing the internet, and my girl will play the sims. That is pretty much it. So which OS should I get with this? Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I am getting sick and tired of people saying vista is slow...I have vista installed on my computer, my brothers computer, and my friends computer. I had XP installed on my computer before I switched, installed on my laptop, installed on my other brothers pc. So basically I'm saying that I have seen both and used them both lots so I'm not like those other people answering that say XP, bcuz I heard vista sux...
Now if you want to play hardcore games like crysis, or uhhh, well only crysis you might want to stick with XP since it still runs a little faster due to the fact that XP is older, has more patches, has less things running at one time, etc. (even though Crysis and other games are supposed to run better on vista they don't YET).
You said that you don't really want to play hardcore games, so you shouldn't really have to worry about the above paragraph. For doing things like CD burning, music files, surfing the internet, and sims, vista should work fine. I prefer vista over XP because of usefull things like instant search, widgets (I really only use a few like the one that changes your background every 5 minutes)
I don't know your other specs. but 2 GB of ram should suffice to run vista quickly. My brother, who runs vista, has 2 GB of ram and he is able to run it as fast as anyone.
I don't understand why people say vista is so bad, I haven't seen any thing about vista that was not just like XP or any other OS when it came out
