Is it free to download and install Nvidia drivers for my card? I'm using windows 7 and ubuntu?
if it is, can you explain to me what's this guy talking about? I quoted this from some guy on a forum..
this is what the guy said: Nvidia is doing well with openSUSE, either to keep the open source nouveau or non free nvidia you'll get best reso from the 1st boot. what does he means? is he saying that, to install Nvidia drivers, one needs to pay? but you can get it for free if you do it the hard way?
the NVidia drivers are (until further notice) FREE
for Linux as well as for LostDOS or any other operating system which runs on Intel (or AMD) computers.

what the guy on the forums refers to w/ free VS. non-free is OPEN-SOURCE sw opposed to PROPRIETARY sw
NVidia provides drivers for the cards you can buy (&, in your case, bought) in order to exploit the advanced capabilities of the cards, specially needed for games and graphic applications (video, Computer Assisted Design aso.)
the driver provided by NVidia (or other companies, like AMD/ATI, Intel aso.) are only available in binary form (for M$ systems as well as for Linux systems) and it is thus not possible to see the source code.
the open source community has developed alternatives to those proprietary drivers; in fact, not many companies bother offering drivers for Linux (but only for the M$ OSes), so the community's effort has nothing to do w/ idealism or anything like that but simply the usual way of working in Linux.
but even though the Linux developers are usually (very) competent, they are not able to exploit all the performances of the cards like NVidia does (NV developers have access to the blue prints and hardware engineer who developed the cards, thus it is easier for them, obviously; furthermore, NVidia pays them just to write the drivers, whereas Linux developers mostly do it on their free time...)
note that ubuntu as well as NVidia recommend using the drivers provided by the distribution / ubuntu; is there any problems with those that make you want to install the official drivers?
if the problems come from the configuration of ubuntu, simply installing the official driver may not solve the problem. if of course you want to use all the capabilities of your card, the official driver is the only way, indeed.
